Employment Relationship: Substitute teachers are employed at-will. Temporary employees are hired for a pre-established period and typically during teacher absence. They are ineligible for benefits and holiday pay. Each school administrator has the prerogative to prohibit the substitute teacher from assignments within their school. Human Resources has authority to block substitute teachers from assignments at school locations and/or district-wide. 

Summary and relationship to the curriculum: All positions will strengthen the delivery of instruction to support the district mission statement. This position performs the duties of a classroom teacher or paraprofessional in their absence. This position may apply to a person temporarily employed to teach a class that does not have a regular teacher. 

  1. Teaches at an appropriate instructional level.
  1. Follows the lesson plans and schedule of the teacher/paraprofessional.
  1. Supports, monitors and encourages appropriate student conduct.
  1. Adheres to the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators.
  1. Provides feedback to the teacher regarding student performance and behavior.
  1. Handles non-instructional tasks efficiently and uses instructional time appropriately.
  1. Maintains effective physical setting for instruction.
  1. Follows professional practices consistent with school district, and state policies in working with students, student records, parents, and colleagues.
  1. Interacts professionally and works cooperatively with staff, students, parents and district personnel.
  1. Maintains confidentiality of students and student records.
  1. Complies with all rules, procedures and policies.
  1. Enforces policies concerning student conduct and discipline.
  1. Maintains accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files reports promptly.
  1. Acts in a professional manner and assumes responsibility for the total school program, its safety and good order.

  1. Takes precautions to protect records, equipment, materials and facilities.

  1. Assumes responsibility for supervising students at all times.
  1. Performs any other duties as requested by district employees.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  1. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associate’s degree or higher preferred. 
  1. Certificate or License Required: Valid substitute teaching certificate, passing score on the paraprofessional exam or professional teaching certificate.
  1. Language Skills: Must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to students.
  1. Mathematical Skills: Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
  1. Reasoning Ability: Must have the ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to apply sound educational principles to various classroom situations.
  1. Technical Ability: Must have considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office.

Professional Requirements: Must serve as a role model to students. Desirable personal characteristics are required. Appropriate dress and grooming consistent with established standards required. Must be at work on time. Must meet attendance standards. Must conduct activities safely.

Physical Demands:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, and lift. Occasionally, the employee must crouch or kneel. The employee must be able to exert or lift up to approximately 30 pounds, with occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. In the event of an emergency lifting and/or assisting in the lifting of students may be necessary.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
